CHILLI Pasilla Bajio

The Pasilla Bajio offers a rich, smoky, mildly hot flavour to many dishes. It is also called 'chilaca' and 'Chile negro'. The name, 'Pasilla' means 'little raisin' in Spanish, referring to the dark brown, wrinkled dried pod. It is called 'chilaca' when fresh and adds character to red chilli enchilada sauce and salsas. When used as a dried pod or in powder form, it is a very flavourful ingredient in many mole sauces.

Plant in spring, 3-4 weeks after the average last frost date and when soil temperatures are at least 18 °C (65 F) or outside temperatures are at least 21 °C (70 F).

MICHELIA Champaca Golden Michelia

A large evergreen tree 6-10 m native to South Asia. It produces the mass of strongly fragrant yellow flowers from summer to autumn.

Sand the seeds lightly with sandpaper, place the seeds in a bowl and cover with hot water. Allow the seeds to soak overnight, until the seeds swell and double in size. If the seeds don't swell, remove from the water and nick the hard outer shell again. Return the seeds to the bowl and add more hot water. Insert one seed into individual post with starting mix soil and put in warm place. The temperature must be not lower than 25 C for germination which can take a few weeks.

ACTINOTUS helanthi Flannel Flower

An erect shrub up to 1 m tall native to NSW. It has soft silver-grey leaves and star shaped flowers, up to 7 cm across which are flannel like in texture. An excellent plant for pots or gardens. Sow seeds when danger of frost is over. Germination can take 4-12 weeks. Prefers full sun, well-drained soil. Do not overwater.

An evergreen Australian rainforest tree which can grow up to 5m; makes an excellent small tree. Suited to growing in containers. It has large glossy dark green leaves and clusters of highly perfumed gardenia-like white flowers. They are followed by Mangosteen like fruits which are edible. Best in tropical and subtropical climates. Prefers full sun and a well drained soil. Frost tender.

A shrub 0.5-2m high with white flowers during spring / summer. Native to Western Australia. It grows well in sandy soils along the coast. Propagation is easy from seeds which do not require any pre-treatment.

SCHOENIA cassiniana Pink Clusters Everlasting

Everlastings are annual flowers that are endemic to WA and make up a large part of the spectacular wildflower display that occur every spring. The name is a reference to the fact that they make excellent dried flowers, and do seem to last forever. Schoenia cassiniana is an annual herb to 0.5 m high with long, thin leaves and clusters of pink everlasting daisy-like flowers. A fabulous profusion of large bright pink blooms over several months from late winter to summer. Excellent for cut flowers or for drying and preserving.

Easy to grow from seed. Quick growing. Fill a pot with moist, sandy soil, wet thoroughly and compress. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface. Do not cover the seed with soil. Ensure the soil does not dry out during germination. Place the seeds in a warm but shaded position to germinate. Germination usually takes 3-5 weeks.
