Oenothera Lamarckiana is a fast-growing biennial plant that can grow from 60 to 150 cm tall. It produces fragrant, light-yellow flowers that are 50mm in size. These flowers usually open in the late afternoon and stay open throughout the evening.

This Evening Primrose plant starts blooming in late spring and continues to bloom throughout the summer, which makes it very attractive to bees, moths, and butterflies. It is suitable for planting in meadows or ornamental gardens, and it also looks great along roadsides and fence lines.

This plant is especially suited to hot, dry sites with well-drained soil. It's a hardy plant that will readily self-sow. It can adapt to most soils and conditions, as long as it is planted in a sunny position, and it's drought-tolerant once established.

Oenothera lamarckiana is native to Brazil. It was cultivated as an ornamental plant and has become naturalised in many countries around the world.

Oenothera seed is best sown directly in their growing position.

  1. Best sown 1 mm directly where they are to grow, do not bury seed deeply as they requires a degree light to germinate. Keep warm and moist but not too wet.
  2. If sowing in trays transplant when large enough to handle.
  3. If mass planting scatter seeds and rake over at a rate of 0.5g per m2

Tropical: Autumn.
Temperate: Spring & Summer.
Cold: Mid-spring to Mid-summer.

Germination: 14-21 days @ 18-21°C

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for more vigorous plants.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
