Little Bluestem is a very ornamental warm-season bunchgrass with fine-textured foliage that forms very dense mounds 45-60 cm tall.
Slender blue-green stems often reach 1.5 metres or more by spring and become radiant mahogany-red with white, shining seed tufts in the autumn. Colour remains nearly all winter. Perennial clumps grow up to 30 cm in diameter.

Native to most of North America, it is a dominant grass of the Tallgrass Prairie region.

It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions and is used as a component of prairie, pasture, and reclamation mixtures.

Schizachyrium scoparium are best sown in early winter (March to June) when the soil moisture is adequate. However, spring sowing

  1. Best sown 3-6 mm directly where they are to grow.
  2. If sowing in trays, transplant when large enough to handle.
  3. If mass planting as a meadow, scatter seeds and rake over.

Germination: 10-21 days at a soil temperature of 15-21°C

*Please note:

  • Please do not discard seeds that do not germinate too hastily; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
