Large evergreen tree up to 70-80 m and with a 2-metre diameter trunk with a narrow conic crown.
Young trees have a smooth and grey bark turning reddish-brown and rough with rough and fissured as the trees mature.
Needle-like glaucous blue-green foliage 1–3.5 cm long with a blunted tip. Erect cones green-tinged with reddish-purple when young, ripening to light grey-brown with orange bracts 11–22 cm tall.
Closely related to Abies magnifica (Red Fir).
Occurs naturally in Western USA in northwest California, Oregon and Washington (Cascade Range and parts of the Coast range).
