There are over 1200 species of acacia occurring in Australia, making it the largest genus of flowering plants in Australia.

WA Conservation Code: Threatened Acacia leptalea retains its ‘Threatened’ status.

A dense, rounded shrub 0.5-2 metres high that produces a with profusion of golden flowers in July. depending on location and climatic conditions

As with all Acacia, they do not have true leaves; they have modified leaves known as phyllodes.
The evergreen phyllodes are straight and slender, measuring 5 to 8 millimetres in length and 0.3 to 0.4 millimetres in width.

Grows in white, grey, red sand and a sandy loam on undulating plains and along drainage lines.

Prefers full sun to part shade although flowering will be more profuse in full sun.

Occurs naturally only in the Mallee in Western Australia.

Acacia is easy to propagate from seed.

The best time to sow Acacia seed is autumn, Late winter and spring.

  1. Sow in a well drained mix.
  2. Soak in water 24 hours
  3. Next, soak seeds in near boiling water  for 24-48 hours,to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
  4. Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.
  5. Place in a semi-shaded postion.
  6. Keep the soil moist, avoid overwatering and ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
