A large shrub or small tree with finely ridged blackish bark and green ferny leaves, dark green on top and paler and downy underneath. Pale yellow flowers are borne in spring to early summer.
In the past, large amounts of Black Wattle trees were harvested for tannin, which was used in the tanning industry. Black Wattle is a crucial habitat tree for many types of wildlife.
Occurring in the drier coastal woodlands of eastern and southern Australia.
A good regeneration species of Acacia.
Ideal Acacia for subtropical and warm temperate regions. Moderately frost and drought-tolerant.
For best results, sow the seeds in spring or early summer. Sowings in autumn and winter may result in slow germination, weaker seedlings, or germination failure.
Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.
