Acacia pruinocarpaia is commonly known as gidgee.

Gidgee is a tree with an upright habit that typically grows to a height of 3 to 12.

It blooms between October and December and produces flowers that are yellow and held in cylindrical clusters. The spherical flower heads have a diameter of 7 to 8 mm and contain 55 to 110 densely packed light golden flowers.

Like most Acacia species, it has phyllodes rather than true leaves. These are a grey green colour with a length of 7 to 17 cm and a width of 6 to 30 mm and slightly curved. The phyllodes have a linear to linear-elliptic.

Acacia pruinocarpaia occurs throughout the arid Centre of Australia, from Carnarvon, Western Australia, east to the Tanami Desert, Northern Territory and Mann Ranges, South Australia. is especially common along watercourses and in low-lying areas that receive drainage.

An adaptable Acacia that is found in many soil types including stony, sand, and loamy soils

For best results, sow the seeds in spring or early summer. Sowings in autumn and winter may result in slow germination, weaker seedlings, or germination failure.

  1.  soak in water for 24-48 hours.
  2. Next, soak seeds in near boiling water overnight to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
  3. Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
