There are over 1200 species of acacia occurring in Australia, making it the largest genus of flowering plants in Australia.
An attractive shrub 1-4 m or tree to 6 m high that produces masses of yellow flowers from April to October.
As with all Acacia, they do not have true leaves; they have modified leaves known as phyllodes.
Often found growing in sand, loam, clay, stony soils, and limestone on coastal dunes, floodplains, and along creeks.
A hardy species that tolerants arid and semi-arid conditions.
Drought tolerant and occasionally frost resistant.
Acacia is easy to propagate from seed.
The best time to sow Acacia seed is autumn, Late winter and spring.
- Sow in a well drained mix.
- Soak in water 24 hours
- Next, soak seeds in near boiling water for 24-48 hours,to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
- Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.
- Place in a semi-shaded postion.
- Keep the soil moist, avoid overwatering and ensure it doesn’t dry out.
Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.
