Allocasuarina inophloia, also known as Woolly Oak or Stringybark She-oak, is a dioecious species with bright red female flowers and small spikes as male flowers.
It has unique horticultural value due to its shaggy bark and open canopy, making it suitable for dry soils, full sun, part shade, and heavy frosts.
It grows fast and has appealing rusty-red heartwood, making it a ideal species for cultivation.

The winged seed is naturally dispersed by wind and becomes the primary method in propagating for cultivation. It grows fast when young and its rusty-red heartwood is appealing for woodwork and cabinet making.

Occurs naturally in Southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales

Adaptable to a range of conditions warm temperate to semi-arid conditions with moist, well-drained soils or dry soils. Prefers full sun to part shade.

Best sown in spring avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum temperature for germination for this species is around 22-25°C.

Sow seed on the surface of a porous seed-raising mix.
Sprinkle a very light covering of the seed-raising mix over the seed to hold the seed in place. Do not bury the seed too deeply.
Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
Place in a warm, shaded, or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
Keep warm & moist
Germination: 2-6 weeks.

Storing at 3-5°C will maintain the viability of the seed for several years.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
