An attractive small multi-stemmed, low spreading shrub can be grown as a foreground plant in a native garden or an informal hedge. Branchlets are very short, less than 8 cm long with the leaves reduced to whorls of teeth around the stem. Red flowers are followed by smooth fruit cones holding the seed around 22mm long and 12mm wide.

Endemic to New South Wales and Victoria.

Prefers light to medium soil in an open sunny position. Drought, frost-resistant, and salt tolerant.

Note: Previously known as Casuarina nana before being renamed Allocasuarina nana.

Wikipedia

Best sown in spring avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum temperature for germination for this species is around 22-25°C.

Sow seed on the surface of a porous seed-raising mix.
Sprinkle a very light covering of the seed-raising mix over the seed to hold the seed in place. Do not bury the seed too deeply.
Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
Place in a warm, shaded, or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
Keep warm & moist
Germination: 2-6 weeks.

Storing at 3-5°C will maintain the viability of the seed for several years.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
