The African Aloe is a stunning succulent plant that can grow up to 2-3 meters tall. It has strong architectural features with thick, fleshy green-blue leaves arranged in rosettes around the stem.
The plant produces tall, showy flowers that form a spike high above the foliage. The flowers are brightly coloured in orange-red and appear in winter and spring. However, in colder regions, flowering may be delayed.
This plant is perfect for coastal gardens and can be grown in pots or containers. They are hardy, drought-tolerant, and easy to grow.
Occurs naturally around Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
The secret to growing aloe is to create a free-draining mix that will not become waterlogged. Aloe seeds can be easily propagated in sandy and well-drained potting soil during spring or summer.
Once you've sown the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of sand (1-2mm) and keep the soil moist but not too wet.
It's best to keep the seeds in a warm and shady area.
When the seedlings are sufficiently grown to handle, they can be planted out.
It usually takes about three weeks for the seeds to germinate when the soil temperature is around 23°C.
