The Large Flowered Aloe is one of the largest spotted aloes, with red tubular flowers in late summer and autumn. The flower spikes to 2 metres tall.
Aloe dyeri forms groups of large rosettes 1.5 metres wide with green spotted channelled leaves to 60 cm long.
It is well suited to shady or semi-shaded areas and makes a good specimen plant in containers.
Occurs naturally along the eastern Mpumalanga escarpment from Bushbuckridge to Piet Retief in South Africa, as well as in western Swaziland.
The secret to growing aloe is to create a free-draining mix that will not become waterlogged. Aloe seeds can be easily propagated in sandy and well-drained potting soil during spring or summer.
Once you've sown the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of sand (1-2mm) and keep the soil moist but not too wet.
It's best to keep the seeds in a warm and shady area.
When the seedlings are sufficiently grown to handle, they can be planted out.
It usually takes about three weeks for the seeds to germinate when the soil temperature is around 23°C.
