A short stemmed suckering aloe that form a wide, flattened compact rosette with attractive speckled foliage.
Tall branching flower stems with attractive orange to coral red flowers held above the rosettes that occur during the winter months.
Originates from Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa.
Growing notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many part of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-24°C
- Sow seed on a porous seed raising mix and cover with a a sandy mix to a depth of 1-2mm
- Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
- The growing medium should be well draining but should remain damp between watering. Keep moist but not too wet as the seed may rot. Do not let the growing mix completely dry out.
- Germination should occur in 14-28 days depending on the temperature and conditions.
General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
The secret to growing aloe is to create a free-draining mix that will not become waterlogged. Aloe seeds can be easily propagated in sandy and well-drained potting soil during spring or summer.
Once you've sown the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of sand (1-2mm) and keep the soil moist but not too wet.
It's best to keep the seeds in a warm and shady area.
When the seedlings are sufficiently grown to handle, they can be planted out.
It usually takes about three weeks for the seeds to germinate when the soil temperature is around 23°C.
