A fast growing ornamental tree from the same family as the Silver Birch pyramidal in habit with glossy bright green rounded foliage that turn brown durng autumn often retained on the tree over the winter months.
During spring pendulous male catkins and female catkins before the leaves emerge. Stobiles (scaly multiple fruits) resembling small pine cones containing next years seed mature to a reddish brown persisting on the tree into winter.
Use in landscaping, windbreaks and hedging. Also a useful bonsai subject.

Cold stratification is recommended for this species. This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator or alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will assist germination.
Cold treatment is not critical for germination to occur but should give increased germination rates.
Seed are best sown in spring. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 16-22°C
