Annona squamosa is a fruiting deciduous tree from the Caribbean commonly called "Custard Apple" that produces delicious creamy sweet sub-tropical fruits
It is a well-branched shrub or small tree with pale green or yellow flowers which have a strong sweet scent. Plants will flower all year in tropical regions, in milder climates, it flowers mainly in spring and early to mid-summer.

Makes a great container plant. Easily grown from seed.

Use as a dessert or as an ingredient blended into milk drinks or in making ice cream, jellies, cakes etc.
Serving suggestions:
Exotic fruit sorbet: Freeze for 30 minutes and eat like a sorbet.
Exotic fruit salad: Combine equal parts custard apple, strawberries, bananas, and pineapple.

Hard custard apples should be stored at room temperature until they soften then refrigerated until used.

Germination video

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 22-30°C

  1. Soak in water overnight.
  2. Sow seed 10-20mm deep
  3. Place in a warm shaded area above 22°C position to avoid dying out.
  4. The growing medium should be well draining but should remain damp between watering. Keep moist but not too wet as the seed may rot. Do not let the growing mix completely dry out.
  5. Germination should occur in around 4-6 weeks under the right conditions.

General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
