Aquilegia vulgaris is an old-fashioned cottage garden plant that produces an attractive mixture of delicate colours and fern-like foliage.
An outstanding garden plant suitable for cottage gardens, pots, or containers.
The small, drooping flowers have firmly hooked spurs and come in various colours. An old-fashioned name is Granny’s Bonnet because the flowers resemble bonnets worn by women in the 19th century.
Plants appreciate afternoon shade in hot climates and tolerate a wide range of soils if they are well-draining. After foliage has declined, plants can be cut to the ground in mid-summer.

Prefers well-drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Water regularly in dry weather and cut back all spent blooms to prolong flowering.
Aquilegia vulgaris is a species of columbine native to Europe. Its common names are European columbine, common Columbine, Granny's Nightcap, and Granny's Bonnet. It is a flowering herbaceous perennial growing 1.2 m tall. The flowers, in various shades of purple, blue, pink and white, are pendent or horizontal with strongly hooked spurs and appear in early summer.

Aquilegia seeds are best sown in trays or containers.
- Fill trays, containers or punnets with a quality seed-raising mix.
- Sow seeds 2-3mm deep. Keep soil moist but not too wet or dry.
Seeds should germinate in 21-28 days but may take longer depending on soil temperatures of 20-25°C.
Transplant seedlings to the garden are large enough to handle (5-10cm tall).

- Cool climates: February to April or September to October.
- Temperate climates: February to May.
- Sub-tropical climates: March to June.
- Tropical climates: March to May.
