Butterfly weed is an American native perennial that produces clusters of flat-topped, orange or yellow flowers at the ends of its stems or in its leaf axils during summer and autumn.

The bright attractive flowers attract  Monarch butterflies, bees and other insects hence the common name.

Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on these plants so by growing some you help increase the butterfly population.

Use in borders, meadow or cottage garden.

Adaptable to a range of soils that are well drained. Drought tolerant.

Cold stratification
Cold treatment is not be for germination to occur but should give increased germination rates.

This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator for 21 days. Alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will assist germination.

Tropical: Spring to summer
Temperate: Spring to summer
Cold: Late spring to mid-summer.

Best sown in containers.

Sow: Sow of surface and cover lightly, do not bury seed deeply as the seed requires light to germinate. Keep moist while germination occurs.
Germination: 10-21 days
Plant space: 45cm
Flowering: 10-12 weeks

Germination can be enhanced by moist stratification. Moisten the soil and place the containers in a plastic bag and put the bag in the refrigerator from 21 days.

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
