Atripleplex nummularia is erect spreading shrub with greyish-white thick foliage well suited to dry conditions and may be either monoecious or dioecious (single sex flowered or both male and female flowers on individual plants) Male flowers are held in clusters or long spikes up to 20cm long. Female flowers are held in the leaf axils or in terminal inflorescence. Often grown for coastal winbreaks and stock fodder.

A very adaptable plant with the ability to withstand salt, drought and coastal conditions.

Atriplex nummularia is native to Australia and occurs in each of the mainland states, thriving in arid and semi-arid inland regions.
Prefers well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Drought, frost, and salt tolerant.

Sowing density for forage production: 

  • 1000-3000 per hectare in rows spaced 4-6 meters apart.
  • For higher production, plant up to 10,000 per hectare.

Pre-treatment:  Flush with cold water to remove any salt.

Seeds are best sown in Late summer, autumn, or Early Spring. Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.  

It is best soaked in water for 24 hours before sowing to assist in the uptake of moisture needed for germination.

Place the seed in a container with water and allow it to soak overnight.
Sow seed 3-5mm deep

Germination should occur within 14-28 days at 18-22°C


Treatment of smoke may also improve results.

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
