False Indigo is a legume with roots that undergo nitrogen fixation and can be long-lived. The blue flowers resemble those of lupines and attract bees and other pollinators.
Although False Indigo is widely used in Australia and Europe, it is native to the eastern U.S. and Ontario, Canada.
It is recommended for the home garden, meadow plantings, and pollinator gardens. It looks excellent in cottage and informal gardens and is helpful on banks and slopes. Plants with deep and extensive root systems make them good additions to bioswales.
A low-maintenance plant that has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for reliable wildlife gardens.
Adaptable to most soil types providing it is free draining. Drought tolerant.
For best results, sow the seeds in spring or early summer. Sowings in autumn and winter may result in slow germination, weaker seedlings, or germination failure.
Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.
