Purple Ruffles is a versatile basil variety, prized for its culinary and ornamental uses. It boasts a strong sweet-basil flavour with hints of anise and cinnamon.
This unique variety was introduced in 1984 by breeder Ted Torrey and later won the 1987 All-America Selections award for its exceptional flavour and appearance. The large leaves are glossy and deep purple with a crinkled texture and jagged edges.
'Purple Ruffles' is heat tolerant, slow to bolt, and features pale pink flowers that create a striking contrast with the dark leaves in late season.
This versatile herb is a lovely addition to kitchen gardens, flower beds, and container gardens.
It has edible lavender flowers in summer which should be pinched out to keep production of leaves.
The best time to sow the seed is in Spring after the last frost.
Germination: 10 to 21 days.
