Male grey-green cones occur singly, rarely in pairs, and are oval in shape and up to three millimeters in length. Female cones 20 mm in diameter occur singly several together on stout clustered fruiting branchlets.
The cones are persistent on the tree and can hold their seeds for several years after maturity.
Endemic to the southwestern parts of Western Australia and southern South Australia.
Prefers a light well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Very hardy and drought and frost resistant.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring. Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
Cold stratification is recommended in climates with warm winters.
Cold treatment is not be critical for germination to occur in colder regions but should give increased germination rates.
This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator vegrtable draw for 4-6 weeks. Alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will assist germination.
Germination generally occurs in 14-28 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment.
