Family: Cupressaceae
Characteristics: Tree to 8 m but often smaller in cultivation

Small tree or shrub to 8 m in height and usually multi-stemmed. Erect branches with typical conifer green or grey green foliage 4 mm long.
Male grey-green cones occur singly, rarely in pairs, and are oval in shape and up to three millimeters in length. Female cones 20 mm in diameter occur singly several together on stout clustered fruiting branchlets.
The densely warted cones are persistent on the tree and can hold their seeds for several years after maturity.
Endemic to Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria where it often grows in open mallee scrub on deep sandy soils and dunes.
Prefers a light well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Very hardy and drought and frost resistant.
Seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, natives will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
