Calothamnus quadrifidus is known as a 'one-sided-bottlebrush' because the red, brush-like flowers are on one side of the stem.
The leaves are linear, about 30 mm long, and 1-2 mm wide.
Flowers occur in one-sided clusters in spring and are usually bright red but yellow forms are known. The flowers contain nectar and are attractive to honey-eating birds.

Calothamnus is a genus of more than 40 species in the South of Western Australia.

Prefers light sandy, well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought, and frost-resistant.

Calothamnus, among our native plants, are relatively easy to grow from seed.

Although Calothamnus seed can be sown year-round in many parts of Australia, the best time for sowing Calothamnus seeds is during spring to early summer in temperate climates. It is best to avoid sowing during the coldest and hottest months.

Calothamnus seeds are tiny.

  1. Place the seeds on the surface of a porous growing mix, where they will settle into the pores once watered.
  2. If needed, lightly cover the seeds with vermiculite to secure them.
  3. Avoid burying the seeds too deeply. Use a fine mist spray for watering to minimize seed disturbance.
  4. Position in a warm, shaded or semi-shaded area.
  5. Maintain warmth and moisture, and prevent the seed-raising mix from drying out or becoming waterlogged.

Under the right conditions, germination typically occurs within 14-28 days at temperatures between 18-22°C.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
