Calytrix tetragona commonly known as Fringe Myrtles, is a genus of aesthetically appealing shrubs that are indigenous to Australia.
At full bloom the terminal masses of star-shaped flowers almost hide the leaves from July to December. The 5 white petals are joined at the base by 5 tapered red sepals which form a cup and remain after the petals drop.
The small leaves, bright green with yellow-green young tips, exhibit a slightly fleshy texture and emit a spicy fragrance when bruised.
is a bushy shrub growing 1.5-2m high in a large range of habitats from heath to scrubland, mainly on sandy soils.
Calytrix thrives in a sunny or lightly shaded garden with well-drained, lime-free soil. However, waterloging will result in root rot.

Calytrix tetragona is a widespread plant growing in many parts of southern Australia.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia by avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year, Calytrix seed is usually best sown in late spring to summer in temperate and cool climates.
Smoke treatment is recommened:
Research has shown that many members of this genus to be responsive to pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination will may occur without smoke treatment it has proved be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates of this species.
Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken either by soaking the seed overnight or by applying to the surface after sowing, both provide good results. Smoke treatments available by clicking here.
- Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix. The seed will lodge in the the pores of the mix once watered.
- Sprinkle a very light covering of the seed raising mix or vermiculie over the seed if required to hold the seed in place. Do not bury seed deeply.
- Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
- Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
- Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
- Germination generally occurs in around 2-8 weeks at 18-22°C in the right conditions.
Please note:
- Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
- As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
- These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
- The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
- Calytrix seed can be difficult to germinate.
