A hardy annual that is the only Centaurea native to North America.

American Basketflower gets its name from the appearance of the flower buds, which exhibit a basketweave pattern on them.
Plants grow up to 120 centimetres tall and look similar to thistles but lack the prickly spines.
Flowers are up to 12 centimetres in diameter, have a sweet, honey-like fragrance and are great for cutting and drying.

It attracts nectar-feeding birds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

Recommended for meadow plantings and the home garden, where it can be used in the back of borders, fragrant gardens, and pollinator gardens.
Plants typically self-seed in the garden, dropping their seeds on the soil at the end of the season, which may germinate and grow.

Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in a sunny position.
An undemanding plant that tolerates poor soils and is drought and frost-resistant.

Seeds can be planted directly into the garden, trays, or containers and then transplanted when they are large enough to handle.
If massing planting, scatter seeds and rake over just enough to cover the seed.

For garden planting, sow the seeds 5mm deep and 20-30 cm apart. It is essential to keep the soil moist throughout the growth period. The seeds will typically germinate within 7-14 days. The optimum germination soil temperature is 15-20°C.

Tropical: Late Summer to Autumn or in Spring.
Temperate: Mid-summer to Late Autumn.
Cold: Spring or Autumn

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
