An attractive clumping perennial plant related to the Kangaroo Paw with strappy grey-green sword-shaped foliage that displays a profusion of attractive heads of yellow flowers that occur on the end of stalks from winter to summer.
An extremely hardy species that grows from underground rhizomes. Tolerant to salty, windy coastal environments and medium to poor fertility soils. Tolerant to most soil types providing they are well-drained. Resistant to moderate frost.
Effective when planted as a border, or en masse to create a grassland appearance.
Occurs naturally in Western Australia.
Grow notes:
In temperate areas of Australia, it is best to sow from the first winter rains through to late winter. The flower will continue until the rains stop and it becomes too hot and dry.
If sowing directly into the ground sow on the surface and rake very lightly, it is not critical to cover all the seed. The seed should germinate 7-14 days after the first rains.
If sowing in containers:
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
