A tall, straight trunk with smooth pinkish cream bark peeling off in thin irregular scales or patches and becoming mottled, exposing a whitish or faintly bluish inner layer with powdery surfaces appearing dimpled.
Typically, a graceful crown of drooping foliage with leaves and strongly lemon-scented flower buds in groups of 3-5 that open to a whitish flower in winter and spring.
Leaves have a strong lemony scent when crushed and yield lemon-scented Citronellal oil.

One of Australia's most recognisable trees can often be seen in Botanical gardens and avenues.

Native to southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.

It prefers deep, sandy, moist, well-drained soil in a protected sunny position and is drought resistant.

The best time to sow members of the Myrtaceae family seed is:
Cool climates: September to May.
Temperate climates: September to May.
Sub-Tropical climates: August to May
Tropical climates: September to November or March to May.
Arid climates: August to May.

The grow mix should be well-draining, preferably with organic compost. This will replicate the soil they require in nature, a potting mix is not recommended.

  1. Sow fine seeds on the surface and cover lightly with the grow mix or vermiculite. Do not bury the seed deeply.
  2.  For larger seeds, sow to a depth of the seed size.
  3. Water with a fine mist spray to avoid seed disturbance.

Germination occurs in around 10-28 days at a soil temperature of 18-22°C

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty in discarding seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are like their natural germination requirements.
  • All seeds must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • Customers should do their due diligence and ensure they are suited to their region.
