An attractive small shrub with broad leaves 2-5cm wide that produces spears of bright yellow pea-like flowers with streaks during summer and autumn in its natural range.
Occurs naturally in North Queensland.
Easy to germinate and will grow successfully in most temperate to hot climates.
Prefers a light, well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought resistant to an occasional frost.
.
The ideal time to sow these seeds is when the weather starts to warm up after winter and the soil is still moist.
Although Crotalaria seeds germinate readily, they have a hard outer coating that prevents water from penetrating, and they won't usually germinate unless pre-treated with boiling water.
1. Place the seeds in a container and pour just-boiled water over them.
2. Let the seeds soak overnight.
3. The swollen seeds can then be sown. If some seeds have not swollen, re-treat them.
4. Sow the seeds 5mm deep.
5. Keep the soil moist but not too wet.
Germination and first leaf should occur within 10-21 days at a temperature between 18-22°C
Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
