Carnation ‘Chabaud’ (pronounced shab-o) is a vintage carnation that dates back to the early part of the 20th century in France where they were developed for cut flowers.
This mix of beautifully large fully double, sweetly scented flowers comes in a wide range of colours including pink, purple, red, white and yellow. and sweetly scented.
An all-time easily-grown favourite that is perfect for beds and borders in fragrant, cut flower or cottage gardens. Looks great when mass-planted.

Prefers rich, well-drained soils. Excellent cut flower.

Deadhead to encourage a second flush of flowers later in the season.

Dianthus is a genus of about 340 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species in Africa and one in the Arctic of North America.

Dianthus and Carnation seeds are small and need to be planted on a fine-sifted bed of compost or potting soil.
The growing medium should not be wet and soggy.

Mist spray the surface of the growing medium. Spread the seeds as evenly as possible on the surface, and mist spray again.

Cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculate or sifted potting soil/compost. Ensure the seeds are placed in a well-lit position, as this is vital for their growth and development. Regular mist spraying is also recommended.

Once the seeds germinate, keep the seedlings moist but not wet.

When to sow.

  • Cool: February to May or August to October.
  • Temperate: March to May or August to October.
  • Sub-tropical: April to October.
  • Tropical: April to October.
  • Arid: April to October

Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle. (2.5 to 5 cm)

Seeds should germinate in around 14 – 21 days.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • Customers should do their due diligence to ensure the product suits their region.
