The fragrant semi-double and double blossoms of ‘Spring Beauty’ add brilliance to the summer garden. Appearing in shades of pink, rose, salmon, and white, the fringed, spice-scented flowers bloom from spring into summer and rise on slender stems from spreading evergreen clumps.
A classic staple of cottage gardens, this charming perennial is also at home in rock gardens or mixed beds and borders.
Deadhead to encourage a second flush of flowers later in the season.
Dianthus is a genus of about 340 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species in Africa and one in the Arctic of North America.
Dianthus and Carnation seeds are small and need to be planted on a fine-sifted bed of compost or potting soil.
The growing medium should not be wet and soggy.
Mist spray the surface of the growing medium. Spread the seeds as evenly as possible on the surface, and mist spray again.
Cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculate or sifted potting soil/compost. Ensure the seeds are placed in a well-lit position, as this is vital for their growth and development. Regular mist spraying is also recommended.
Once the seeds germinate, keep the seedlings moist but not wet.
When to sow.
Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle. (2.5 to 5 cm)
Seeds should germinate in around 14 – 21 days.
