Dillwynia is a genus of about 20 species of flowering plants in the family Fabaceae occurring in Australia.
Dillwynia cinerascens is commonly known as grey parrot-pea, is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae and occurs in south-eastern Australia.

The grey parrot pea is a low-lying to erect, heath-like shrub that grows to a height of 30 centimetres to 1.5 metres.

The flowers are mainly orange or yellow and are grouped in short stalks at the ends of branchlets. The standard petals range from 5 to 8 millimetres in length, while the wings are shorter, and the keel is the shortest. Flowering occurs from September to December.

After flowering, egg-shaped pods develop, containing the seeds

The leaves are linear to thread-like, 5 to 20 millimetres long and 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres wide, sometimes with a few white hairs.

An attractive small ornamental shrub at that grows in a range of soil well drained soils. Suitable for gardens.

Prefers a light well-drained soil in an open sunny or partlty shaded position. Drought and frost tolerant.

Dillwynia cinerascens was first formally described by botanist Robert Brown in the Botanical Magazine in 1821. Brown came across the plant in 1804 growing near the River Derwent in Tasmania. The Latin word cinerascens means becoming ash grey.

Dillwynia is simple to propagate from seed.

The ideal time to sow Dillwynia seeds is in spring.

Sow the seed in a well drained mix.

  1. Soak in water 24 hours.
  2. Soak the seeds in near-boiling water for 30-60 seconds to help break the dormancy of the seeds
  3. Sow the seeds on the surface.
  4. Place in a semi-shaded position.
  5. Keep the soil moist, avoid over watering and ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
