The Giant Flame Lily, one of the largest lillies is the world with large sword shaped bright green leaves to 1.5 metres long and spectacular large red globular flowers that occur on terminal flower spike up to 6m high.

Prefers a light well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought resistant but frost tender.

Endemic to New South Wales.
The genus Doryanthes was first described in 1802 by the Portuguese priest, statesman, philosopher and botanist José Francisco Corrêa da Serra (1751–1823), a close friend of Joseph Banks.

The best time to sow Doryanthes seed is autumn.

  1. Prepared the growing containers quality potting mix.
  2. Sow on surface. Firm down and cover them 1-2 mm.
  3. Keep moist avoid waterlogging or drying out.
  4. Place the seeds in a warm and sheltered location with bright but indirect light.
  5. Seeds usually take 1 to 2 months to successfully germinate and sprout.

As the seedlings grow, be sure to transplant them into larger containers every couple of months to ensure consistent, luscious growth.

After about 12 to 14 months, the young plants will be big enough to plant in the garden.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty in discarding seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • All seeds must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • Customers should do their due diligence to ensure the product suits their region.
