A stunning evergreen shrub suitable for most Australian locations, with rich purple flowers with a white edge to the petals on long, slender, cascading stems during the spring and summer months. The leaves are oval with serrated edges.
Bright yellow berries follow the flowers in autumn and winter; if left to drop, they will often germinate where they fall.
This shrub can be trimmed as a hedge or makes a great pot plant on the patio.
It originates from Mexico and Brazil and is adaptable to a range of climates and conditions.
It prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil in an open, sunny position, and it is drought- and frost-resistant.
The best time to sow Duranta seeds is late winter or early spring when the soil is warming.
Seed can be sown in containers or directly in the soil.
- If sowing in containers, ensure they have good drainage. A root training tube is ideal. Use a seed growing mix and sow 6mm deep.
- If sowing directly, prepare the soil by removing weeds and adding some organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure and sow 6mm deep.

- Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
- As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
