A spectacular shrub that produces masses of large tall purple/blue flower spikes in an abundance from mid to late spring with rosettes of grey leave at the base of the flowers.
An extremely hardy species that is ideal for hot dry locations and only requires water during prolonged dry periods.
Prefers a well-drained sandy soil, good tolerance to drought, light frost and coastal locations.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-20°C for this species. Late winter to early summer is generally an ideal time.
No special pre-treatment is require for this species.
General note: Seeds of many plant species are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
