Ruby salt bush is a common species of semi-arid and arid climates. It is a small, shrub to about 1 metre high with greyish foliage. It is not widely cultivated but would be a useful plant for gardens in dry climates.

Occurs naturally in the Avon Wheatbelt, Carnarvon, Central Kimberley, Central Ranges, Coolgardie, Dampierland, Esperance Plains, Gascoyne, Geraldton Sandplains, Gibson Desert, Great Sandy Desert, Great Victoria Desert, Hampton, Jarrah Forest, Little Sandy Desert, Mallee, Murchison, Northern Kimberley, Nullarbor, Ord Victoria Plain, Pilbara, Tanami, and Yalgoo in Western Australia spreading into South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Prefers a light to heavy soil in an open position, drought and frost resistant and salt tolerant.

Please Note: Although many of the traditional Bush Food and Medicine plants are now commercially produced in various forms we recommend you re-search these before using them as any form of food or medicines. Some parts of the plant may not be edible or some may need prepared before they are safe to eat or use in any way. We do our best to describe their traditional & modern uses. It is the purchaser responsibility to ensure they are fit for their intended use.

Seed is best sown in spring or summer in temperate climates or winter in Arid climates.

Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended for this species.

Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken either by soaking the seed overnight or by applying to the surface after sowing, both provide good results.

Smoke treatments available by clicking here.

  1. Sow seed 3-4 mm deep.
  2. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  3. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
  4. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
  5. Germination generally occurs in around 21-28 days at 18-30°C

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
