A close cousin to lettuce Auante Garde is an heirloom variety from Italy that has large crisp leaves and a deep well blanched crisp heart that makes an excellent alternative to lettuce.
A hardy winter variety that withstands frosts.
Endive is also known as Chicory, all members of the chicory family are favored for the bitterness, unlike lettuces which are chosen for their delicacy.
Grow notes:
Prefers moist fertile well-drained soil but grows well in almost any garden soil in a sunny position.
