Seed in Chaff
Family: Myrtaceae
Sub-family: Myrtoideae
Characteristics: Multi-stemmed Mallee 8m
Seed per packet: Approx. 15
Seed per gram: Approx. 50
Previously known as Eucalyptus kingsmillii ssp. alatissima.
Typically grows as a multi-stemmed mallee but occasionally forms a single-stemmed small tree.
Produces stunning crimson ridged and horned flower buds that occur in clusters of 3 before opening to reveal pink-red coloured flowers that appear in spring.
Greyish-green curved lanceolate leaves are 13 cm long.
Endemic to the central inland of Western Australia in the regions of the Central Ranges, Gascoyne, Gibson Desert, Great Sandy Desert, Great Victoria Desert, Little Sandy Desert, Murchison, Pilbara, Tanami, and extending into northwest South Australia.
Prefers sandy-free draining soil in an open sunny position. Drought and frost-resistant.
Although seeds can be sown most of the year if you avoid the coldest and hottest months, spring is generally the best time to sow.
The grow mix should be well-draining, preferably with organic compost. This will replicate the soil they require in nature.
A potting mix is not recommended.
Germination occurs in around 10-28 days at a soil temperature of 18-22°C
