Eucalyptus globulus is used in the Essential Oil industry is used for expectorant, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic poperties.

Native to Victoria and Southern New South Wales.

Although eucalypts must have been seen by the very early European explorers and collectors, no botanical collections of them are known to have been made until 1770 when Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander arrived at Botany Bay with Captain James Cook.

Southern blue gum was first formally described by Joseph Henry Simmonds in the book Trees from other lands for shelter and timber in New Zealand, and gave them the name Eucalyptus bicostata.

Eucalyptus is easy to propagate from seed.
The best time to sow Eucalyptus seed is autumn, late winter, and spring avoid the coldest and hottest months.

The grow mix should be well-draining, preferably with organic compost. This will replicate the soil they require in nature.

Potting mix is not recommended.

  1. Sow fine seeds on the surface and cover lightly with the grow mix or vermicule. Do not bury the seed deeply.
  2.  For larger seeds, sow to a depth of the seed size.
  3. Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.

Germination occurs in around 10-28 days at a soil temperature of 18-22°C

Cold stratification recommend:

Eucalyptus globulus is a  cool mountain species of Eucalypt that’s native range has a cold winter before germinating in spring.
Cold stratification of 21-28 days is not critical for germination will generally increase germintion rates for this Eucalypt.

This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator for 21-28 days. Alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will also assist in increasing germination rates.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
