As with all species of mallee the lignotuber is a swollen root crown that contains stores of starch.
An attractive ornamental that produces stunning large bright crimson flowers up to 7 cm across from July or September to December or January.
Prefers sandy well-drained soils in an open sunny position, drought resistant and the occasional light frost.
Occurs naturally in a few limited areas of the Avon Wheatbelt, Geraldton Sandplains, and the Swan Coastal Plains in Western Australia.
Scientists believe that the family Myrtaceae arose between 60 and 56 million years ago. Pollen fossils have been traced back to the ancient super-continent Gondwana's breakup.
Recent estimates indicate that the Myrtaceae family includes approximately 5,950 species across about 132 genera.
Although seeds can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia, the optimal time to sow seeds is when the weather warms up after winter.
Avoid the coldest and hottest months.
The grow mix should be well-draining.
A potting mix is not recommended.
Germination occurs in around 7-21 days at a soil temperature of 18-22°C
