An erect bushy shrub up to 1.5 metres high that produces pea-like orange and red-pink from August to November.
An attractive shrub with variable narrow to broadly lance-shaped leaves to about 50 mm long followed by brownish seed pods.

Occurs naturally in the Avon Wheatbelt, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest and Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia.

Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought and frost resistant.

The best time to sow Gastrolobium seed when the weather start to warm, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.

Seed germinates readily, however they do have a hard outer coating that is impervious to water and generally germination will normally not occur unless the seed is scarified by abrading or pre-treated with boiling water first.

  1. Place the seed in a container and pour in just-boiled water and allow to soak 2 minutes
  2. Sow the seed on the surfae and cover them lightly with seived sand or a layer of vermiculie.
  3. Keep warm & moist but not to dry or waterlogged.

Germination should occur in 14 to 28 days @ 18-22C.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
