An erect bushy shrub up to 1.5 metres high that produces pea-like orange and red-pink from August to November.
An attractive shrub with variable narrow to broadly lance-shaped leaves to about 50 mm long followed by brownish seed pods.
Occurs naturally in the Avon Wheatbelt, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest and Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia.
Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought and frost resistant.
The best time to sow Gastrolobium seed is Late winter and spring, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
Seed germinates readily, however they do have a hard outer coating that is impervious to water and generally germination will normally not occur unless the seed is scarified by abrading or pre-treated with boiling water first.
Germination should occur in 10-21 days @ 18-22C.
