A beautiful and easy annual producing lots of large stylish double shaped blooms with waved, frilled petals. Good in borders and as a cut flower.
Adaptable to most garden soils but prefers a moist, well-drained average soil in a sunny position.
Grow notes:
Tropical: Autumn.
Temperate: Late summer to Early Winter.
Cold: Early-Spring or Late Summer
Sow: Sow seed on surface and cover lightly (3mm) do not bury to deeply.
Sow direct in growing position or in trays of seed raising mix and transplanted when when strong enough to handle.
Germination: 10-12 days
Plant space: 15cm
Flowering: 8-10 weeks
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
Clarkia is an easy flower to grow from seed.
- The best time to sow Clarkia seeds directly outdoors is in the spring after the danger of frost has passed.
- Choose a location that receives full sun or partial shade.
- Add some compost or organic matter for good drainage. Sow seeds about 5mm deep and keep the soil moist until germination, which usually takes 1-2 weeks.
- Once the seedlings are about 10cm tall, thin them out for good air circulation.
