Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position or dappled shade, drought resistant. Tolerant to occasional frost to -5°C
Occurs naturally in the Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest, Mallee, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren in Western Australia.
This species was first formally described in 1825 by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle
The best time to sow Gastrolobium seed when the weather start to warm, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
Seed germinates readily, however they do have a hard outer coating that is impervious to water and generally germination will normally not occur unless the seed is scarified by abrading or pre-treated with boiling water first.
- Place the seed in a container and pour in just-boiled water and allow to soak 2 minutes
- Sow the seed on the surfae and cover them lightly with seived sand or a layer of vermiculie.
- Keep warm & moist but not to dry or waterlogged.
Germination should occur in 14 to 28 days @ 18-22C.
