The best time to sow Grevillea seed is autumn or spring; avoid the hottest and coldest months of the year in cool temperate climates.

There are two main methods to assist germination.

  1. For larger seeds, the most usual pre-treatment method is to ‘nick’ or peel off the seed coat with a sharp blade(razer blade or shape knife to allow moisture to reach the embryo. This needs to be done with care to avoid damage to the embryo.
  2. For smaller seeds with thin walls, pour hot but not boiling water over the seed and allow them to soak for a day or two.
Sow in a normal seed-raising mix, transplant when large enough to handle.
  1. Sow seed on a porous seed raising mix and cover lightly. Do not bury seed deeply.
  2. Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
  3. The growing medium should be well-draining but should remain damp between watering.
  4. Keep moist but not too wet as the seed may rot. Do not let the growing mix completely dry out.
  5. Germination should occur in 14 days too servel months depending on the temperature and conditions.

Pre-treatment of smoke: Not considered critical for this species but may be beneficial.
Many members of the Proteaceae are responsive to pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination will often occur without smoke treatment it has proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in many species.
Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken either by soaking the seed overnight or by applying it to the surface after sowing, both provide good results. Smoke treatments are available by clicking here.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
