The Cauliflower Hakea is an attractive, extremely hardy native shrub with a single stem and a distinct bun shaped to columnar habit. Pale green to yellow flowers occur in dense clusters in the leaf axils occur during winter and spring.
Endemic to Western Australia.
Prefers a light moist well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought and frost tolerant.
Hakea belongs to the ancient plant family Proteaceae, which split into two subfamilies, Grevilleoideae in Australia and Proteoideae in South Africa, before the separation of the Gondwanaland continent around 140 million years ago.
The best time to sow Hakea is spring.
- Sow the seeds into a tray of well-drained coarse sand and vermiculite seed-raising mix.
- Do not sow too deep; they only need to be covered with a small amount mix.
- Keep the mix moist but not saturated.
- Germination should occur in 14-42 days, depending on the temperature and conditions.
Pre-germination of seeds by sowing into a closed container containing moist vermiculite or similar material is also useful, particularly for winter sowing when outdoor temperatures may be unsuitable.
Germination usually occurs in 1-2 weeks using this method, and when the root has reached about a centimetre or so in length, the seedling can be placed into a small pot of seed-raising mix.
