Rusty coloured new growth foliage develops into green ovate leaves with light coloured veins. Attractive white-cream flowers that occur from mid-winter to early-summer.
Commonly known as the rusty hakea Hakea ferruginea is a medium sized shrub that grows from 1 to 4.5 metres depending on conditions.
Occurs naturally in the South-West Province of Western Australia in the regions of the Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains and Jarrah Forests.
Prefers a light to medium well drained soil in an open soil position, drought, frost resistant. Withstands coastal windy conditions.
Hakea belongs to the ancient plant family Proteaceae, which split into two subfamilies, Grevilleoideae in Australia and Proteoideae in South Africa, before the separation of the Gondwanaland continent around 140 million years ago.
The best time to sow Hakea is spring.
Pre-germination of seeds by sowing into a closed container containing moist vermiculite or similar material is also useful, particularly for winter sowing when outdoor temperatures may be unsuitable.
Germination usually occurs in 1-2 weeks using this method, and when the root has reached about a centimetre or so in length, the seedling can be placed into a small pot of seed-raising mix.
*Please note:
• Please do not be too hasty in discarding seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are like their natural germination requirements.
• All seeds must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
• These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
• Customers should do their due diligence and ensure they are suited to their region.
