An erect pungent shrub, 0.2 to 1.8 metres high that produce's blue-purple flowers that occur from May to November.
An attractive small shrub with alluring bright bluish-purple pea-shaped flowers that occurs in clusters borne in axillary racemes of up to 4 flowers with each flower up to 15 mm wide.
As with all the Fabaceae family, they are nitrogen fixers.
Prefers well-drained soil in a protected. participle shaded position, frost resistant.
Adaptable to a range of soils, including shallow soils on rock, sandy soils, laterite, gravel, clay and loamy soils on Granite outcrops, coastal limestone, flats and undulating sandplains.
Occurs naturally in the Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest, Mallee, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren in Western Australia.

Hovea pungens was first formally described in 1837 by George Bentham
The best time to sow Hovea seed is Late winter and spring, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
Seed germinates readily, however; they do have a hard outer coating that is impervious to water and generally germination will normally not occur unless the seed is scarify by abrading or pre-treated with boiling water first.
- Place the seed in a container, pour in just-boiled water and allow to soak overnight.
- The swollen seed can then be sown, re-treat seeds that have not swollen.
- Sow the depth of 1-3mm
- Keep warm & moist but not too dry or waterlogged.Germination should occur in 10-21 days @ 18-22C.

- Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
- As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
