The leaves and flowers are both features of this tree, the large green glossy leaves offer a tropical look year-round. The sweetly scented cream flowers that age to yellow are 4-5 cm in diameter occurring in clusters during spring.
Widely cultivated throughout Australia the Native Frangipani usually grows to around 8 metres in height although, in its native environment it can grow to 20 metres.
Flowers attract honey-eating birds, bees and butterflies. Flowers best in full sun but can be also grown in shaded positions.
Native to the rain forests of Queensland and New South Wales in Australia and New Guinea.
Adaptable to most soils but prefers well-drained soil with high organic content. Suitable for growing in both warm and cool climates. In dry climates, it performs best with supplementary water during hot dry periods. Frost tolerant once established.
Germinates readily from seed.
Grow notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they are discarded.
