An attractive prostrate trailing vine with a hairy stem and dark green leaves. Scarlet red pea-shaped flowers occur in clusters of 2 or 3 from spring to summer.

An ideal ground cover in native landscaping. Also useful for covering banks, hillsides, and difficult-to-maintain areas.
Occurs naturally in the regions of Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest, Mallee, Swan Coastal Plain, and Warren in Western Australia.

Prefers medium to heavy soil in a protected shaded position, drought and frost-resistant.

The genus Kennedia was first formally described in 1805 by Étienne Pierre Ventenat

Kennedia seeds germinate readily, however, they do have a hard outer coating that is impervious to water. To assist in the uptake of moisture for germination it is best scarified by pre-treating with hot water first.

Hot water treatment is recommended for this species.

  1. Place the seed in a container and pour in just-boiled water and allow to soak overnight.
  2. The swollen seed can then be sown, and re-treat seeds that have not swollen.
  3. Sow seed on the surface of a porous seed raising mix. The seed will lodge in the pores of the mix once watered.
  4. Cover with seed raising mix to a depth of the seed width. Do not bury the seed too deeply.
  5. Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
  6. Keep warm & moist, and avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.

Germination should occur in 10-21 days @ 18-22°CKennedia seeds germinate readily, however, they do have a hard outer coating that is impervious to water. To assist in the uptake of moisture for germination it is best scarified by pre-treating with hot water first.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
