Native to China Lagerstroemia indica is an often multi stemmed, deciduous tree with a wide spreading, flat topped, open habit when mature. The bark is a prominent feature being smooth, pinkish-grey and mottled, shedding each year. Leaves are small and dark green changing to yellow and orange in autumn. Bright pink, lavender or white flowers with crimpled petals 8 cm across occur in dense terminal panicles.
Adaptable to most soils in an open sunny position, drought and frost tender.
